Portfolio Trader

Freemium

Native Apple portfolio tracker with both MWR and TWR, cost-basis accounting and a one-time purchase.

Portfolio Trader is a native iOS, iPadOS and watchOS portfolio tracker from Purescope, a one-product Australian company that has shipped it continuously since 2012. It is a record-keeping and P&L-analysis tool built around manual and CSV-imported transactions with automatic pricing: no broker connection, no accounts and no server, with data kept on device and optional iCloud sync. It reports both money-weighted and time-weighted returns, offers FIFO or average-cost accounting, and handles multi-currency holdings within a single portfolio. Unusually for the category, it is unlocked by a one-time in-app purchase rather than a subscription.

Best for

Apple-only, self-directed investors who hold listed equities, ETFs, investment trusts and funds across several currencies, want cost-basis accuracy, and prefer to pay once and keep their data on device.

Strengths

  • Both MWR and TWR on the portfolio history chart, with index overlay — strong on the most-contested dimension
  • Cost-basis accounting you can choose: FIFO or Average Cost, exposed as a setting
  • True multi-currency inside a single portfolio, with GBP-in-pence handling that many trackers get wrong
  • Local-only, account-free architecture with Face ID lock, plus an Apple Watch app and home-screen widgets
  • One-time purchase rather than a subscription — structurally attractive in a subscription-heavy field

Trade-offs

  • Apple-only — no Android, no web app
  • No broker or bank sync of any kind; every transaction is manual or CSV
  • No dividend forecast, health score, rebalancing, goals, custom tags, AI or backtesting
  • Pricing is opaque — the free cap is only described as "small portfolios", with two same-named Pro purchases at $4.99 and $49.99
  • No tax-report output, and no first-party evidence of crypto, bonds or metals

Portfolio Trader vs PortfolioGlance

Portfolio Trader beats us where the Apple platform wins: a native iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch experience with widgets and offline, local-only data ownership, deeper per-position cost-basis mechanics (a FIFO/average-cost toggle, pence-quoted GBP handling), and a one-time purchase with no subscription. It reports both MWR and TWR, so on return method it is a genuine draw — we cannot claim that as a differentiator here. PortfolioGlance is a web app, but adds AI portfolio analysis, a health score, rebalancing, goal projection, custom tag dimensions, dividend forecasting and broader asset and platform reach (Android and web), with a free core that has no position cap. Pick Portfolio Trader if you live in the Apple ecosystem and want a pay-once local ledger; pick PortfolioGlance for the analysis and decision layer and cross-platform reach.
