Portfolio Performance

Free

Free, open-source desktop tracker with true time-weighted and internal-rate-of-return performance, stored entirely on your own machine.

Portfolio Performance is a free, open-source desktop application. Everything runs on your own machine — there is no account, no sign-up and no server. Its distinguishing trait is the rigour of its performance maths: it reports both a true time-weighted rate of return and an internal rate of return, and documents how each is calculated. Data goes in by hand or through CSV, PDF broker statements and Interactive Brokers Flex Query.

Best for

Meticulous investors who want defensible return figures and full local control, and who do not mind that the tool is a desktop application rather than a web app.

Strengths

  • Both true time-weighted and internal-rate-of-return figures, with a documented methodology
  • Entirely free and open source, with no paid tier on the desktop product
  • Works fully offline — no account, no linking, nothing leaves your machine
  • Unusually flexible custom taxonomies, including splitting one ETF across regions or sectors

Trade-offs

  • Desktop-only for data entry; the mobile companion app is read-only
  • No AI analysis of any kind
  • No dividend forecast, tax reports or goal projection
  • The interface is dense and rewards patience rather than a first-time visitor

Portfolio Performance vs PortfolioGlance

On return methodology and local control, Portfolio Performance is the stricter tool, and it is open source — if those are your priorities, take it. PortfolioGlance is a hosted web app with nothing to install, adds AI analysis and goal projection, and reaches the same time-weighted and money-weighted figures without asking you to maintain a desktop install and an XML file.
