Investbrain

Free

Self-hostable web tracker for listed securities with a documented API and bring-your-own-LLM AI chat.

Investbrain is a self-hostable, single-maintainer web app that tracks listed securities you enter by hand as buy/sell transactions, prices them from a swappable market-data provider, and layers a bring-your-own-LLM chat assistant over your own holdings. It is distributed as an official Docker image (over 90,000 pulls) with an optional free-to-register hosted version. Its licence is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0: the source is available and free for personal use, but it is non-commercial and not an OSI-approved open-source licence (GitHub itself does not classify it as open source), so despite the project describing itself as “open-sourced”, commercial use is outside the grant. Its feature surface is deliberately narrow — transactions, holdings, dividends, FX, a value/gain chart, a documented REST API and AI chat.

Best for

Technically confident self-hosters who want a private, ad-free ledger of stocks and ETFs, want to point the AI at their own API key or a local model, and are comfortable with cost-basis-style returns.

Strengths

  • A properly documented public REST API with bearer tokens and a published OpenAPI spec — rare at any price
  • Swappable market-data providers behind one env var, so you are not tied to a single price vendor
  • Bring-your-own-LLM AI, portfolio-level and per-holding, including a fully local option
  • Serious multi-currency plumbing — per-transaction currency, ECB rates and even GBX/pence alias handling
  • Genuinely free with no account linking and full self-host data ownership

Trade-offs

  • Returns are cost-basis only — (market value − average cost) — with no TWR/MWR/XIRR and no benchmark series
  • Not multi-asset: every holding must resolve to a live ticker, so no real estate, cash, bonds or crypto (crypto is “not planned”)
  • No health score, rebalancing, goal projection or custom tags — the portfolio object has three fields
  • Non-commercial CC-BY-NC 4.0 licence, not OSI open source, despite the project's “open-sourced” wording
  • Single maintainer, README-only documentation, and no native mobile app

Investbrain vs PortfolioGlance

Investbrain and PortfolioGlance suit different buyers. Investbrain beats us on things a self-hoster values: a documented public REST API better than most of the category, full self-host data ownership we do not offer, a bring-your-own-LLM option that runs AI at zero marginal cost, and swappable price providers. But we beat it on the correctness of the number itself — it reports value-minus-cost with no time- or money-weighted return and no benchmark, while we publish TWR and MWR — and on breadth, since its hard requirement that every holding be a live ticker excludes real estate, cash, bonds and crypto, all of which we cover. We also add the health score, rebalancing, goal projection, dividend forecasting, a native-ish mobile experience and a shareable AI roast it has none of. A note on openness: its source is readable and self-hostable, but the CC-BY-NC 4.0 licence is non-commercial and not OSI-approved, so it is not open source in the sense Ghostfolio or Wealthfolio are. Control and inspectability make the case for Investbrain; correctness and completeness without running anything yourself make the case for PortfolioGlance.
